TL;DR
- WhatsApp Coexistence lets one number run on both the WhatsApp Business app and the Cloud API at the same time, so your team keeps chatting from the app while automation runs on the same line.
- It solves the choice most tools force on you: migrate fully to the API and lose the app, or keep the app and lose automation. Coexistence gives you both.
- On Invent, you pick the Coexistence path when you connect WhatsApp, scan a QR code from the app, and you are live. It syncs up to 6 months of past chats, needs no payment method to start, and is reversible to API-only anytime.
- The one rule to remember: open the Business app on the registered phone at least once every 14 days, or Meta pauses the API link until you reconnect.
- The same number then plugs into a shared inbox, a built-in CRM, broadcasts, and your other tools, so WhatsApp becomes part of your whole operation.
Most businesses hit the same wall the moment they want to automate WhatsApp: the tools tell them to migrate the number to the API and give up the WhatsApp Business app their agents already live in. Coexistence removes that wall. Here is what it is, when to use it, and how to turn it on without touching code.
What is WhatsApp Coexistence?
WhatsApp Coexistence is a Meta feature that lets a single phone number run on the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Cloud API at the same time. Your team keeps replying to customers from the app on their phone, exactly as they always have, while automations, bots, and workflows run on the same number through the API. Messages from both sides stay in sync.

One number, two places, the same conversation.
Before coexistence, connecting a number to the API meant fully migrating it, which pulled the number out of the Business app and ended the manual, phone-based workflow a lot of small teams rely on. Coexistence keeps that workflow in place and adds the API on top, so nobody has to change how they already work on day one.
For a business owner, the practical translation is simple: you get automation, a proper inbox, and broadcasts without asking your team to abandon the app they know.
Coexistence or API-only: which path is right for you
When you connect WhatsApp on Invent, you choose one of two paths. They are both no code, and the right one depends on whether a human still needs the app.

Two ways to connect: keep your number, or start a fresh one.
- Coexistence, connect an existing Business app number
Choose this when your team still replies from the WhatsApp Business app and you want to add automation without disrupting that. Your existing number, contacts, and recent history come along. - API-only, create a fresh number
Choose this when you want a clean, automation-first number that no human works from directly. There is no app to keep and no 14-day rule to think about.
If you are not sure, coexistence is the safer starting point. It preserves your team's current workflow, and you can migrate it to API-only later from WhatsApp Manager whenever you decide the app is no longer needed. Moving the other direction is harder, so starting on coexistence keeps your options open.
How to set up WhatsApp Coexistence in Invent
The whole flow is no code, and most of the effort is on your phone, not in a console. You start from the Channels screen, where WhatsApp Business sits alongside your other channels.

Start from Channels and connect WhatsApp Business.
Have the phone with the WhatsApp Business app installed nearby, then:
- Open the WhatsApp connect dialog. In your assistant's
Channelstab, start a new WhatsApp connection to open Meta's signup flow inside Invent. - Choose the Coexistence path. When Meta asks how you want to connect, pick "Connect a WhatsApp Business App" rather than creating a new account. This is the coexistence path.
- Enter your WhatsApp Business app number. Type in the number that is currently active on the Business app on your phone.
- Link it from your phone. On the phone, open the Business app and scan the QR code or enter the access code Meta shows, which authorizes the connection. No re-registration and no new SIM.
- Choose what history to sync. Pick how much past conversation to bring across. Invent can sync up to 6 months of your 1:1 chats, so you start with context instead of an empty inbox.
- Confirm and finish. Confirm the account name and timezone, then let the connection finalize. Coexistence numbers can start sending and receiving right away, with no payment method required.
- Name the connection and pick the number in Invent. Give the connection a name, select the number, and attach it to your assistant. Your assistant is now live on that number while the app keeps working.

Pick "Connect a WhatsApp Business App" for coexistence.
That is the entire setup. Your agents keep the app; your assistant handles everything you point it at. For the full walkthrough, including how to release a number that is registered somewhere else, see our WhatsApp setup guide.
What syncs, and the one rule to remember
Coexistence is a shared-control mode, so it helps to know exactly how Meta splits things and the single rule that keeps it healthy.
- The 14-day rule. Someone should open the WhatsApp Business app on the registered phone at least once every 14 days. If two weeks pass with no app open, Meta severs the API link and your assistant stops replying until you reconnect. It is a Meta signal that the number is still genuinely yours, not an Invent limitation. A recurring calendar reminder is enough, and if nobody actually needs the app anymore, that is your cue to migrate to API-only.
- What syncs. Only 1:1 conversations flow into Invent. Group chats and Status replies stay inside the app and are handled there. Knowing this up front avoids the "where did that group message go" surprise later.
- It is the Business app, not personal WhatsApp. Coexistence works with the WhatsApp Business app, not the green personal app. A personal number can be moved into the Business app first, or you can use API-only with a different number.
None of this is a dealbreaker, and all of it is documented, which is the point: you go in knowing the rules instead of discovering them.
Coexistence is only step one: connect the rest of your stack
Search around WhatsApp coexistence and you will see the same follow-up question everywhere: can it work with my CRM and my automations? On Invent, that is where the number stops being just a WhatsApp line and becomes part of your operation.
Because the same coexistence number lives in the platform, it inherits everything else. Conversations land in one shared inbox next to your other channels. Contacts and custom fields build up in a built-in CRM as people message you. You can run broadcasts from the same number with approved templates. And through Actions, plus MCP and 300+ integrations, the assistant can reach the tools you already run on, from spreadsheets to your CRM to automation platforms like Zapier and n8n.
That is the difference between a coexistence connection and a coexistence platform: one keeps your phone in play, the other turns that phone number into a front door for the whole business.
WhatsApp Coexistence, done on a real platform
At Invent, we think the interesting part of coexistence is not the trick of running two things on one number. It is what you build on top of it. A number that used to be one person answering on a phone becomes a shared inbox your whole team can see, a CRM that fills itself, an assistant that covers the after-hours, and a broadcast channel that reaches the same customers, all without asking anyone to give up the app they trust. You keep the human touch that made WhatsApp work for you, and you add the scale you could not reach by hand.
Keep the app your team loves. Add the automation your business needs.
FAQs
Does Invent support WhatsApp Coexistence?
Yes. When you connect WhatsApp, choose the Coexistence path to keep your existing WhatsApp Business app number and add Cloud API automation on the same line, no code required.
Do I lose the WhatsApp Business app if I turn on coexistence?
No. That is the whole point of coexistence. Your team keeps using the app on their phone, and Invent runs on the same number alongside it.
Will I keep my contacts and chat history?
Yes. Coexistence preserves your contacts, and Invent can sync up to 6 months of your past 1:1 chats when you connect, so you do not start from scratch.
Is WhatsApp Coexistence free to start?
You can connect on Invent's free plan, and coexistence numbers do not require a payment method to begin sending and receiving. You only pay Meta's Cloud API rates once you send at volume.
What is the 14-day rule?
For coexistence numbers, the WhatsApp Business app on the registered phone should be opened at least once every 14 days. If it is not, Meta pauses the API connection until you reconnect. It is a Meta rule for shared-control numbers.
Can I switch from coexistence to a full API number later?
Yes. Coexistence is reversible. You can migrate the number to API-only from WhatsApp Manager whenever you decide the app is no longer needed.
Does coexistence work with the personal WhatsApp app?
No, it requires the WhatsApp Business app. If your number is on personal WhatsApp, move it into the Business app first, or use API-only with a different number.
