TL;DR
- Instagram has basic auto replies built in. Meta Business Suite can send a saved message when someone DMs you or comments a keyword. The message is the same for everyone.
- An AI auto reply holds the whole conversation. It answers from your own prices, policies and catalog, asks follow-up questions, and hands the chat to your team when it should.
- Comments can start a DM. When someone comments a word like INFO under your post or reel, your assistant sends them one private message, and the chat continues when they answer.
- Use keywords, not every comment. Messaging everyone who comments is the fastest way to get an account restricted.
- You stay in control. Every chat lands in one shared inbox, and you can pause or turn off AI replies per conversation.
Your Instagram DMs do not keep business hours. People reply to Stories at midnight, send a reel with "how much?" on Sunday, and comment PRICE under a post while your team is in a meeting. Each one is a customer asking to buy, and each one cools down while it waits.
An Instagram auto reply makes sure the first answer goes out in seconds. This guide covers what Instagram gives you for free, where a saved message stops being enough, and how to set up an AI auto reply for DMs and comments in a few minutes.
Can you set an automatic reply on Instagram?
Yes. A professional Instagram account (Business or Creator) can send automatic replies in two ways.
- Meta Business Suite automations
Sends a saved message for a first DM, an FAQ button or a comment keyword. Best for: hours, address, a link to your catalog. - An AI assistant connected to Instagram
Reads each message and answers it from your own information. Best for: questions where the answer depends on stock, price, size or location.
The built-in automations are free and a good place to start. What they send is a reply written in advance: one message, the same for every person who triggers it.
A customer who writes "do you have this in medium?" usually has a second question waiting behind the first. Can you ship to Miami? How long does it take? Can I pay when it arrives? A saved message cannot look any of that up. That is where an AI auto reply earns its place.
Instagram auto reply vs AI auto reply
- What it sends
Saved auto reply: the same message to everyone. AI auto reply: an answer to what this person asked. - Follow-up questions
Saved auto reply: no, the person waits for your team. AI auto reply: yes, it keeps the conversation going. - Where answers come from
Saved auto reply: text you wrote once. AI auto reply: your knowledge base, prices, policies and connected tools. - Languages
Saved auto reply: the one you wrote it in. AI auto reply: the language the customer writes in. - Handoff to your team
Saved auto reply: manual. AI auto reply: built in, with the full thread attached.
Most businesses use both: a saved reply for the questions that never change, and AI for the conversations that sell.
Why use AI to auto reply on Instagram
- Replies in seconds, 24/7
Story replies at midnight and DMs on Sunday get an answer while the customer is still interested. - High volume without new hires
A reel that takes off can bring hundreds of DMs and comments in an hour. The AI answers all of them at once. - Less burnout for your team
Nobody spends the day typing prices and shipping times. Your team keeps the conversations that need a person. - Personal answers
Each customer gets a reply to what they asked, in their language, from your real prices and policies. - A better customer experience
No "we'll get back to you." The customer gets the answer, a follow-up question, or a person when it matters. - More sales from your posts
Comments with a keyword turn into private conversations that can end in an order or a booking.
What an AI auto reply answers on Instagram
Once Instagram is connected, your assistant answers every message that reaches your DMs:
- Direct messages from people who tap Message on your profile.
- Story replies, including reactions with a question attached.
- Reels and posts shared into the chat with "how much?" or "is this available?"
- Messages from Instagram ads that send people to your DMs.
- Comments with a keyword on your posts and reels, which start a private conversation (more on this below).
All of it lands in the same shared inbox as your WhatsApp, Messenger, email and web chat conversations, answered by the same assistant with the same knowledge.

How to set up an Instagram auto reply with AI
The setup happens in one popup and takes about five minutes. Here is how it works in Invent.
- Check your account type.
You need an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator). If yours is personal, the connect flow lets you switch in two clicks. Your username, posts, followers and Reels stay exactly as they are. You do not need a Facebook Page. - Open your assistant and go to Channels.
Find Instagram Direct Messages and click Connect. - Sign in with Instagram.
Open the Connection dropdown and click + Connect Instagram. Sign in on Instagram's own page with the business owner's account, not an employee's personal account that may leave later. - Leave both message permissions on.
Instagram asks which permissions to grant. Allow access to messages and Access and manage messages must both stay on, or the assistant cannot read or send DMs. - Name the connection and click Connect Channel.
A name like "Sales Instagram" reads better a year from now than the name of whoever signed in. - Send a test DM.
Message the account from a different profile. Your assistant replies within a few seconds, and the conversation appears in your inbox.
Before you turn it on for real customers, check what your assistant knows. An AI auto reply is only as good as the material behind it: prices, sizes, shipping areas, return policy and opening hours should be in its knowledge base first.
How to auto reply to Instagram comments with a DM
Someone comments INFO under your reel. Your assistant sends them a private message with the answer, and the conversation continues in your inbox like any other chat.
This is the fastest way to turn a post that performs well into real conversations. You publish as usual, ask people to comment a word, and every person who does gets a personal answer within seconds, without anyone watching the comments.
Speed matters here more than anywhere else. When a post or reel takes off, comments arrive seconds apart, and the person who asked is still scrolling. Nobody on your team can answer four comments in two minutes and still do their job, and a reply that comes hours or days later reaches someone who has already moved on. An AI auto reply answers each one while the person is still looking at your post.
Turn it on
- Open your assistant's Channels tab.
- Click Manage on your Instagram channel.
- Set Reply to comments to Comments with keywords.
- Add your words under Keywords, pressing Enter after each one.
- Save.
The setting is off by default. Capital letters and accents do not matter, so GUIA, guía and Guia all match the same keyword. The comment can include other words around the keyword. The setting covers comments on all your posts and reels, so you do not pick posts one by one.

Keywords or every comment
The Reply to comments setting has three options: No, Every comment and Comments with keywords.
Keywords are the safe default. Answering every single comment is the fastest way to get an account restricted. Meta watches for accounts that message everyone who comments, and a post that takes off turns that into hundreds of unwanted messages in minutes. People writing "nice one" or tagging a friend do not want a private message, and enough of them reporting it puts the account at risk.
Keywords keep the volume matched to real intent: only the people who asked get an answer. Use Every comment only on posts where every comment is a real question, such as a product launch with a small audience, and switch back to keywords if the post starts to take off.

What happens after someone comments
- The comment arrives
It appears in your inbox as a new conversation, with the comment text and a link to the post. - Your assistant answers
One private message, sent within seconds. - The person answers
The conversation opens, and from then on it works like any other chat.
Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days. That first message is a single text message: no files, buttons or option lists, because only one message is allowed before the person replies. Your assistant knows this. It does the work first, answers in one message, and invites the person to reply if it needs anything else.
Once they answer, everything is available again: photos, files, follow-up questions, and your team taking over from the inbox.
If the person already messaged you in the last 24 hours, the chat is already open. The assistant answers the comment inside that existing conversation, so a comment never starts a second chat with someone you are already talking to.
The comment reaches your assistant quoted in the conversation, so it answers the actual question instead of sending a stock reply. If your assistant can answer it in a DM, it can answer it from a comment.

How to keep Instagram automation safe
Instagram comment automation is allowed when it runs through Meta's official API and answers people who asked. These habits keep it that way.
- Pick words people would not type by chance. INFO, GUIDE, PRICE and START work well. Avoid thanks, nice, wow, love or your brand name: those show up in normal comments.
- Ask for the word in the post itself. Say it in the video, the caption and the on-screen text: "Comment GUIDE and we'll send it to you." The people who type it are telling you they want the answer.
- Do not lead with a bare link. A first message that is only a URL reads as spam to people and to platforms. Answer the question, then share the link once the person replies.
- Keep public replies human. If you also reply publicly under the comment, vary the wording. The same public reply repeated dozens of times is the pattern platforms look for.
- Use one tool per account. If another tool such as ManyChat or Respond.io is still connected to the same Instagram account, it can hold the conversation and your assistant's replies fail. Remove the tools you no longer use in Instagram's apps and websites settings.
In Invent, the safe parts are built in: keyword replies are the recommended mode, the assistant sends one private reply per comment, and it answers the question instead of sending a bare link. Your part is picking good keywords and asking for them in the post.
For the research behind comment replies, and Meta's exact rules, see our guide to Facebook comment auto reply without getting banned. The same setting works on Facebook Page comments.
When your team takes over
An auto reply should never trap a customer with a bot. In Invent, every conversation has an AI replies control with three states:
- On
The AI answers every message in this conversation. - Paused
The AI stays quiet while your team handles the chat. Sending a reply pauses it automatically. - Off
The AI does not answer this contact until you turn it back on.
A paused AI wakes up on its own when the customer writes again after 10 quiet minutes, so a chat your team stepped into does not go silent for good. For complaints, large orders or anything sensitive, set handoff rules so the chat lands with the right person, with the full thread and the original comment attached. Our AI customer support guide covers how to split the work between AI and your team.
Troubleshooting Instagram auto replies
- I commented the keyword and nothing happened
Comments from your own account are ignored. Test from a different profile. - Comments arrive but no reply is sent
AI replies are paused or off for that conversation, or a teammate took it over. - The channel was connected before comment replies existed
Open the channel settings and click Save once, with no other change. - A comment deleted after a few seconds never arrived
Meta only sends comments that still exist. Nothing is wrong on your side. - The person never got a second message
That is Instagram's rule: nothing else can be sent until they answer. - DMs arrive but replies fail
Another tool connected to the account holds the conversation. Remove it. - A Meta Business Suite automation replied and the AI turned off
Meta automations count as a person replying. Turn them off in Meta Business Suite automations, or turn AI replies back on. - The customer shows as "Instagram User"
Instagram hides some profiles. If you need the name, tell your assistant to ask for it.
FAQs
Can you set an automatic reply on Instagram?
Yes. Professional accounts can send saved automatic replies from Meta Business Suite, for a first message, FAQ buttons or comment keywords. For personal replies that answer each person's actual question, and a better experience for your customers, connect an AI assistant to your Instagram DMs.
How do I auto reply to Instagram comments with a DM?
Use a tool connected through Meta's API with a comment reply setting. In Invent, open your Instagram channel settings, set Reply to comments to Comments with keywords, add words like INFO or PRICE, and save. Anyone who comments one of them gets a private message within seconds.
Is Instagram comment automation allowed?
Yes, through Meta's official API and within its limits: one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days. Accounts get into trouble by messaging everyone who comments, so reply to keywords people chose to type rather than to every comment.
How do I turn off AI auto reply on Instagram?
In Invent, set AI replies to Paused or Off in any conversation, or switch the Instagram channel off in your assistant's Channels tab. To stop a Meta Business Suite automation, turn it off in Meta Business Suite automations. If Meta's own AI is answering for you, our guide on how to turn off Meta Business Agent walks through it.
Do I need a Facebook Page to automate Instagram DMs?
No. Invent connects with Instagram's own login, so a standalone Instagram professional account is enough. Accounts already linked to a Facebook Page work too.
Does Instagram auto reply work on reels?
Yes. Comment replies work on comments under your posts and reels, and DM replies cover messages that share a reel or reply to a Story.
Can I use ManyChat and an AI assistant on the same Instagram account?
No. When two tools are connected to the same account, one of them can hold the conversation and the other's replies fail. Pick one tool per Instagram account and remove the others in Instagram's apps and websites settings.
How much does an Instagram AI auto reply cost?
Invent is free to start on Pay As You Go, and you pay for AI usage as it grows. The Business plan is $29 a month with $29 in usage included. There are no per-seat fees. See pricing.
