TL;DR
- A WhatsApp carousel template, also called a carousel message template, is a single message that carries 2 to 10 swipeable cards. Each card has an image or video, a short line of text, and up to two buttons.
- The WhatsApp product catalog is a different thing. It is a commerce feature: you upload products with prices and stock, and customers browse and add to a cart inside the chat.
- For most service businesses and anyone who is not selling priced products in the chat, carousel templates do the job of the catalog without the commerce setup. No product feed, no Meta App Review, no cart.
- Use the catalog when you need real shopping (prices, cart, checkout). Use carousel cards when you need to show a few clear choices and route the reply.
- In Invent this feature is called Carousel cards for WhatsApp. Think of it as your catalog, but easier: you build the cards, submit once, and let your AI assistant send the right set based on what the customer asked.
- You never need a catalog to start. Setup is a one-time thing, updating a card is quick, and for fully dynamic moments you can upload photos to your Knowledge base and let the assistant show them inside the chat as the conversation happens.
A catalog sells products. Cards present choices. Most businesses need the second one.
You want to show a customer a few options inside WhatsApp. Your services. Your plans. The three things you help with. The obvious tool sounds like the WhatsApp catalog, because that is the feature everyone has heard of. But the catalog was built for stores with priced inventory, and setting it up is heavier than most businesses need. There is a lighter path that looks almost identical to the customer, and it is called a carousel template.
What a WhatsApp carousel template is
A carousel template is one message that holds a row of cards the customer can swipe through. Meta calls it a media card carousel template, and the rules are simple:
- Every carousel has a short body text at the top, then 2 to 10 cards.
- Each card has an image or video at the top, an optional line of body text, and up to two buttons.
- The cards are uniform. If one card has body text, all of them do. If one card has a "Learn more" button, they all follow the same button pattern.
- Buttons can be quick replies (the customer taps and it sends a word back to you) or actions like opening a link or calling a number.
A card is not a product listing. It is a small unit of content: a picture, a sentence, and a next step. That flexibility is the whole point. A card can show a haircut style, a real estate listing, a legal service, a class on your schedule, or a plan tier. Anything you can put in a picture and a sentence, you can put on a card.
Carousel templates sit in the marketing category, so like any WhatsApp template they go to Meta for approval before you can send them. Approval usually takes a short while, and once a template is approved you can send it as often as you like to customers who have opted in.
What the WhatsApp catalog is, and what it asks of you
The WhatsApp product catalog, spelled catalogue in some regions, is a commerce feature. You upload a product feed, where each item has a name, a description, a price, images, and availability. That feed lives in Meta Commerce Manager and becomes the source of truth for everything you sell in the chat.
Once the catalog exists, you can send products a few ways:
- A single product message shows one item with its image, price, and description.
- A multi-product message shows a curated set of products, organized into sections, up to 30 items in one message.
- A product card carousel pulls priced cards straight from the catalog.
There is a real advantage here for stores. These product messages do not need template approval, and they always show the current price and stock, because they read live from your feed. If you run a shop, that is exactly what you want.
But the catalog also asks for things a service business does not have. It wants a product feed with prices. It wants commerce permissions that go through Meta App Review. It wants you to think in SKUs and inventory. If you are a law firm, a clinic, an agency, or a real estate team, you do not have a product feed, and forcing your services into one is work with no payoff.
Catalogs and Flows, managed from your templates
Two other WhatsApp features are worth knowing next to carousel cards, and they set up a little differently.

Catalog, carousel cards, and Flows, side by side: a product grid, swipeable cards, and an in-chat form.
A WhatsApp catalog is a commerce feature. You upload a product feed with names, prices, images, and stock, and customers browse it and add items to a cart inside the chat. It is for stores selling priced products. You build a catalog on Meta, not in Invent. From Invent, go to WhatsApp, then Catalog, and click Open Commerce Manager to land on Meta's interface, where you create the catalog and, optionally, link your existing store. Once it exists on Meta, you manage and send it from Invent through your templates, the same as a Flow.
A WhatsApp Flow is an interactive form inside the chat. It is one or more screens where, instead of typing back and forth, the customer fills in fields, dropdowns, and pickers. A Flow is for collecting structured input: booking an appointment, capturing a lead, running an intake form, or guiding someone through a choice. Flows carry one extra requirement that carousel cards do not: to use them, your account needs Meta Business Verification, or an increased messaging quality tier.
The setup path is what differs. Carousel cards you build and submit to Meta right from Invent, so you never leave the platform. Catalogs and Flows you create and get approved on Meta first, and then you manage and use them from Invent. Once a catalog or a Flow is approved on Meta, it appears in Invent's template builder: when you add a button to a template, it can be a Flow, a Catalog, or Products, right next to the ordinary quick-reply and link buttons. So one approved template can open a booking Flow or show your catalog, and your assistant sends it on cue.

In Invent, a template button can be a Flow, a Catalog, or Products, so you manage all three from one builder.
Carousel cards, catalog, or Flows: which one you need
These three features look similar in the chat, but they do different jobs behind the scenes. Carousel cards are best for services, plans, and categories and need no prices. A product catalog is for stores selling priced products, and it needs a feed with prices. WhatsApp Flows are for booking, quotes, and lead capture, built from interactive screens.

Catalogs, Carousel cards, and Flows compared: what each is, how you set it up, and what each is best for.
Read the table one way and it is obvious. If you sell priced products and want a cart in WhatsApp, the catalog is correct and worth the setup. If you sell services, or you want to present a few clear choices and guide the reply, the carousel template gives you the same swipe-through experience without any of the commerce machinery.
When carousel cards replace the WhatsApp catalog
Here is the pattern we see again and again. A business wants "the catalog thing" in WhatsApp, but when you look at what they actually want to show, there are no prices and no cart. They want to present options and route the conversation. That is a carousel, not a catalog.
Services instead of products. A med spa wants to show its treatments. A law firm wants to show its practice areas. None of that belongs in a product feed. Three cards, one per service, with a "Tell me more" button, does the job and reads beautifully.
Categories that branch the conversation. An agency helps with three things. A real estate team works sales, rentals, and commercial. Show the categories as cards, and the button the customer taps tells you exactly where to take the chat next.
A short menu, not a store. A restaurant wants to show its three signature dishes, not its entire inventory with live stock. A gym wants to show its class types. When the goal is "here are a few things, pick one," cards win because they are lighter to build and easier to keep current.
The tell is simple. If the customer needs to see a price and add something to a cart, use the catalog. If the customer needs to see a few options and pick a direction, use cards.
How to build WhatsApp Carousel Cards in Invent
At Invent we manage WhatsApp templates from inside the platform, so you do not have to live in Meta Business tools to set this up. A WhatsApp carousel is a message template, which means Meta has to approve it before your assistant can send it. Here is the full path.
1. Connect your WhatsApp number
Link your WhatsApp Business number to your assistant under Channels, then open WhatsApp. Invent connects through the WhatsApp Cloud API, which is Meta's own official API, so this is the same Meta connection your assistant already uses to chat with customers. Once it is linked it shows as Connected.
2. Make the display name match your business
Meta gives every number a Display name, and it does not always match your business. Meta does not sync it for you, and it will not sync from the platform either. You can fix it from the number settings with Change name, so customers see your real business name instead of a default.
3. Build the carousel
Start a New WhatsApp template and add a card for each service under Carousel cards. A few rules to know:
- Every card shares the same media type and button layout (a WhatsApp rule). If Card 1 uses an image and a quick reply, every card does.
- Card image: one image per card.
- Card title: the short label under the image, for example
Student VISA. - Buttons: pick the button type once, a quick reply (like "Reserve Service") or a link. Same choice across all cards.
- Bubble text: the line that shows above the cards, before the customer swipes.
A live preview updates as you build, so you see the exact swipe-through the customer will get before you submit.

Build each card in Invent; the preview shows exactly how the carousel arrives in WhatsApp.
4. Submit for review
Click Submit for review and the template goes to Meta. You watch the status move from in review to approved right in Invent.
Be patient with Meta here. Some templates clear in minutes, others take 24 hours or longer, but the approval does come. You do not need to complete Meta Business Verification for a template to be approved. What matters is that your account status is approved by Meta, which you can check in Invent under WhatsApp, then Overview.
5. Add a payment method, or Meta will not approve it
This is the step most people miss. Meta will not approve or activate a template until there is a valid payment method on the WhatsApp Business account. Add a card in Meta's Billing and payments, then the template can move to approved.
6. Watch the status and quality rating
After review, the template shows its state. Active, Quality pending means approved and sendable, but it has not earned a quality score yet. The quality rating, Green, Yellow, or Red, builds from real usage, customer feedback, and engagement once you start sending. Green is healthy.

Active with Quality pending means approved; the quality score builds as you send.
Send the cards with an action, and let the assistant decide
An approved template does nothing until something sends it. In Invent, that something is the Send Message Template action.
Add a Send Message Template action to your assistant, then set these fields:
- To Number: set it to
AI Controlled Fieldso the assistant sends to the current customer automatically. - Template: pick the approved template, for example
docs_services (en_US). The Template Preview shows the cards so you can confirm you chose the right set. - Action Name: a clear name like
Send service cards. - When To Use: plain-language instructions that tell the assistant when to fire this and which carousel to send. For example: send the Visas set for work, study, invest, or visit questions; the Residency and Citizenship set for green card or citizenship questions; and the Families and Employers set for petitions or sponsorship. Send only the set that matches.
- Connection: the WhatsApp connection to send from.
- WhatsApp Phone Number: the sending number tied to that connection.
Save with Update Action.

The Send Message Template action: pick the approved template, set the recipient to the AI-controlled field, and tell the assistant when to send which carousel.
This is where cards stop being a brochure and become a conversation. Build one carousel per topic, one for each part of your business, then let the assistant choose which Send Message Template action to fire based on what the customer asked. A customer asking about one service triggers the cards for that service. A customer asking about another gets a different set. The customer never sees the wrong options, and every card they tap routes the chat to the right place.
This is the piece a plain catalog cannot do on its own. The catalog shows products. Your Invent assistant reads the question, understands the intent, and sends the set of cards that answers it. The cards become the visual layer, and the assistant becomes the brain that decides which layer to show. Same channel, same chat, different path per customer.
And because your assistant already grounds its answers in your knowledge base and your customer records, the message around the cards is specific too. The cards present the choice. The assistant handles the words before and after.
Do you need a WhatsApp catalog? Usually not
Here is the part worth saying plainly. None of this requires a catalog, not to start and not ever. Carousel cards are the simplest WhatsApp catalog alternative: a store that wants a cart in the chat should build a catalog, but everyone else can skip it.
Setting up carousel cards is a first-time task. You build the cards once and submit them once. After that, keeping them current is light work. To change a card, you swap the image or the text and submit the update. There is no product feed to sync and no inventory to reconcile.
For the moments that should be fully dynamic, there is an even lighter path. Upload your photos to your Knowledge base, the same place your assistant already reads from to answer questions. Then the assistant can show the right image inside the chat as the conversation happens, no template and no approval needed, because it is replying to the customer in real time. Add a photo for a new service today, and the assistant can start using it in conversations right away.
So you have two speeds, and you pick per moment. Carousel cards are the polished, pre-approved way to present a fixed set of options. Knowledge images are the instant way to show something the moment a customer asks about it. Both skip the catalog entirely.
What we're building at Invent
At useinvent.com we build AI assistants that chat, talk, and answer from your data across more than 300 integrations. WhatsApp is one of the channels those assistants live on, and we manage the WhatsApp pieces, templates, broadcasts, business profile, and account health, from inside the platform so you are not stitching Meta tools together by hand.
We built Carousel cards for WhatsApp because they fit our view of what a good assistant does. It should present clear choices, not a wall of text. It should route the conversation, not dead-end it. And it should read the customer well enough to show the right thing at the right time. Cards give the assistant a clean visual vocabulary, and the Send Message Template action gives the assistant a way to send them on cue.
We think most businesses reaching for "the WhatsApp catalog" actually want this. Not a store. Your catalog, but easier: a tidy way to say "here are your options" and take it from there.
Cards are the interface. The assistant is the reason they work.
The catalog is a great tool for stores. If you sell priced products and want a cart in WhatsApp, build it. But if you have been putting off "the catalog thing" because setting up a product feed felt like too much for what you actually sell, there is a lighter answer that your customers will not be able to tell apart. Present your options as cards, and let your assistant decide when to show them.
Show a few good choices. Let the assistant know which few.
FAQs
What are Carousel cards for WhatsApp in Invent?
It is our name for building and sending WhatsApp carousel templates from inside Invent. You design the cards, submit them to Meta once, and then send them with the Send Message Template action. Think of it as your catalog, but easier, because there is no product feed to maintain.
Do WhatsApp carousel templates need approval?
Yes. Carousel templates are marketing templates, so Meta reviews them before you can send them. Approval is usually quick, and once approved you can reuse the template as much as you want with customers who have opted in.
How many cards can a WhatsApp carousel have?
Between 2 and 10. You set the exact number when you create the template, and all cards must share the same shape. If one card has body text or a button, every card has the same.
What size should WhatsApp carousel images be?
Use a 1.91:1 landscape ratio, for example 1456 by 764 pixels, and keep every card the same size. All cards in a carousel share one aspect ratio, so a consistent image size keeps the row looking even.
Do I need a product catalog to use carousel cards?
No. That is the main reason to use them. A carousel template is built from images, text, and buttons you provide, so there is no product feed, no prices, and no Meta App Review for commerce permissions.
Is the WhatsApp catalog free?
The WhatsApp catalog is free to use, but it asks for setup: a product feed with prices, and commerce permissions that go through Meta App Review. Carousel cards need neither, so they are the faster way to show services or options.
WhatsApp catalog vs carousel cards: which should I use?
Use the WhatsApp catalog when you sell priced products and want a cart in the chat. Use carousel cards when you want to present services, plans, or categories. The catalog is a store; carousel cards are a way to show a few clear choices.
Can I use carousels for services instead of products?
Yes, and this is the best fit. A card can show any service, plan, or category. Service businesses like clinics, law firms, agencies, and real estate teams use carousel cards to present their offerings without forcing them into a store format.
What is the difference between a carousel template and a multi-product message?
A carousel template shows cards you design and can hold up to 10 of them. A multi-product message pulls priced items from your catalog and can show up to 30, but it needs the catalog set up first. Carousels are for options and services. Multi-product messages are for shopping.
Can my AI assistant send the right carousel based on the question?
Yes. In Invent you build one set of cards per topic, then the assistant fires the Send Message Template action for the set that matches the question, so people only ever see the options that fit what they asked.
Can the assistant show images without a template?
Yes. For in-conversation moments, upload the images to your Knowledge base and the assistant can show them inline as it replies, with no template and no Meta approval. Carousel templates are the structured, pre-approved way to present a set of options. Knowledge images are the instant way to show something the moment a customer asks about it.
Do I need a WhatsApp catalog?
No, and you may never need one. A WhatsApp catalog is only for selling priced products with a cart inside the chat. To present services, plans, or categories, carousel cards and Knowledge images both work without a catalog, a product feed, or Meta App Review for commerce.
