WhatsApp Business Banned? Why, and How to Recover
Blog/Industry/WhatsApp Business Banned? Why, and How to Recover

Last updated: September 2026

TL;DR

  • Two different things get called "banned"
The free WhatsApp Business app shows "This phone number can't use WhatsApp" and offers a Request review button. The WhatsApp Business Platform, the version behind any software, enforces differently: a quality rating, a messaging limit, and policy reviews through Meta Business Suite.
  • The review is the only appeal
Meta says most reviews finish within 24 hours, and if there is no review button the ban is final. Emailing WhatsApp, using a friend's account, or paying an "unban service" does nothing; Meta says so in writing.
  • The usual causes are ordinary behavior
Messaging people who never wrote to you, too many unanswered chats in a month, a burst of new contacts after an ad, connecting from a new device.
  • Sometimes it is WhatsApp, not you
On August 3, 2026 Meta's automated moderation wrongly locked accounts worldwide and restored them the same day. Check that first.
  • Prevention is consent and pacing
Opt-in before the first message, replies that keep your counters healthy, templates for anything you send first. That is what keeps a number Green.

Your WhatsApp number is on the sign, the billboard, and every flyer you ever printed. When it stops working, the problem is bigger than an app. This guide is the calm version of what to do, built only on what Meta publishes, because most of what ranks for this question is either out of date or selling something.

First, is it you or is it WhatsApp?

Before you touch anything, rule out the case where you did nothing at all.

On August 3, 2026, WhatsApp's automated moderation wrongly flagged legitimate accounts around the world and put them under review for up to 24 hours. Meta confirmed it to TechCrunch the same day, restored the accounts, and said: "Sometimes we get this wrong, and if we do, we try to fix it as quickly as possible to get people back to chatting."

So the first check is simple. Open the app and read the exact screen:

  • "Your account is under review"
The screen shows a date requested and a note that your account activity and device info were checked. That is a review, not a ban. Wait the 24 hours Meta names, do nothing else, and most of these clear on their own.
  • "This phone number can't use WhatsApp"
The notice comes with a Request review button. That is a ban with an appeal open. Keep reading.
  • The same notice with no Request review button
Meta's page says that means the ban is final. Skip to the section on rebuilding.

The two screens that matter most, side by side: the ban with the appeal open, and what it looks like after a review goes your way.

Two WhatsApp screens side by side: the ban notice "This account can't use WhatsApp" with a Request review button, and the restored screen "This account can now use WhatsApp" with a Verify account button.

Left, the ban notice with the appeal still open. Right, what a successful review looks like: banned August 10, review requested August 11, restored.

If your business runs on the Platform, the version connected to software, you will not see either screen. Your symptom is different: replies stop delivering, a template gets paused, or the messaging limit drops. That is the second half of this guide.

What the ban notice means, in Meta's words

Everything in this section comes from WhatsApp's own page, About account bans.

  • The notice
"This phone number can't use WhatsApp: [phone number]." You can request a review of the number, and most reviews are completed within 24 hours.
  • How to request it
Tap Request review in the app. WhatsApp notifies you once it has reviewed the account and made a decision. Only one phone number can be reviewed per appeal.
  • If there is no button
The ban is final and cannot be appealed.
  • Contacting WhatsApp another way does not help
Reaching WhatsApp outside the review process, or through someone else's account, will not speed up the review or influence the decision.
  • Nobody else can unban you
Third-party services cannot block or unblock a WhatsApp account. Only WhatsApp can. Every "unban service," "unban APK," and "support email that works" you will find is either useless or a scam.
  • Why accounts get banned
Activity that violates the Terms of Service: spam, fraud, or anything that puts other users' safety at risk.
  • While banned
You cannot reach your chat history or backups until the number is unblocked.

That last line is the one to act on today, before anything happens: turn on backups now. If the number is ever banned, the backup is the only copy of every customer conversation you have.

The version nobody wants to see has no button at all.

WhatsApp ban notice reading This account can't use WhatsApp, with Requesting a review is not available and a Register new number button.

When the notice says a review is not available, the only button left is Register new number. That is Meta's way of saying the decision is final.

Why WhatsApp Business bans numbers

Meta does not publish a list of triggers, but its rules, its block-reason options, and years of the same complaints point to the same handful. Almost all of them look like normal business behavior from the inside.

  • Messaging people who never wrote to you
Someone hands over a number, you send a promotion, they tap Block and pick a reason. Meta's help center lists the reasons customers can choose when they block a business: no longer needed, didn't sign up, spam, offensive messages, or no reason. "Didn't sign up" and "spam" are the two that hurt.
  • Too many unanswered chats in a month
In October 2025 WhatsApp announced a monthly limit on messages sent to people who do not reply, for both people and businesses, reported by TechCrunch. Every unanswered message counts, the exact number varies by region and test group, and the app shows a counter as you approach it. If you see "102 of 150 started" at the top of a chat screen, that is this limit. Cold outreach from the free app runs straight into it.
  • The same message to many contacts
Broadcast lists reach only people who saved your number, and pasting one text into dozens of chats is the pattern Meta's systems were built to catch.
  • A modified app
GB WhatsApp, WhatsApp Plus, and any "unban APK" are unofficial clients. Meta's help center has a dedicated page on suspensions for unofficial apps. Installing one to recover a banned number makes the ban permanent instead.
  • A sudden surge
A new Click-to-WhatsApp ad that lands hundreds of first-time chats on one number in an afternoon looks, to an automated system, like a spam run. The ad is fine; the unprepared number is the problem.
  • A new device or connection
Several owners report a ban minutes after linking WhatsApp Web on a work laptop or a new network, and one r/whatsapp thread describes several numbers restricted after being linked to the same PC. The likely reason: automation runs through web sessions, so a new linked device on a fresh number gets a harder look. The account is fine; the pattern triggered a check.
  • Reports
Enough customers reporting the number in a short window, whatever the reason.

Notice what is not on the list: using WhatsApp for business. Meta wants you here. The bans are about how people are reached, not that they are.

Tap See guidance on the ban notice and WhatsApp shows its own short list, which is the same list in fewer words.

Two WhatsApp Guidance screens: Some things we don't allow, listing bulk messages, automated messaging, and unsolicited messages, and How to use WhatsApp responsibly, listing the official app, messaging with permission, and group controls.

The guidance behind the ban notice. Bulk, automated, and unsolicited messages are the three things WhatsApp names first.

Temporary block or permanent ban

The app uses both, and they call for different responses.

  • A temporary block
It shows a countdown, usually 24 hours, and clears on its own. It is a warning. Do nothing: a reinstall, a SIM swap, or a second account on the same number can turn it permanent.
  • A permanent ban
It shows the "can't use WhatsApp" notice. If it has a Request review button, appeal once, well. If it has no button, the number is gone from WhatsApp and the path forward is a new number done properly.
  • "My number keeps getting banned"
If the same number is banned, reviewed, restored, and banned again, the trigger is still running. Usually the outreach pattern or the device pattern is still running, and a repeat ban after a successful review is the hardest to reverse. One owner on r/whatsapp with a five-year-old account hit a loop after forwarding one message to three new prospects. What ended it: a different message for each person, their name in it, no links in the first two or three messages, and no forwarding to numbers that do not know you.

How to appeal, step by step

There is one appeal, and it is inside the app. Everything below matches the screens on Meta's About account bans page.

  1. Open WhatsApp Business and read the notice. If there is no Request review button, stop here; there is no appeal.
  2. Tap Request review. A sheet titled Add a review reason opens, marked optional, with four choices: my account was stolen and I lost access, my account was flagged by mistake, I broke the rules by accident and have reviewed the Terms of Service, or something else. Pick the one that is true. There is no text box.
  3. Tap Request review again to submit. The sheet says the review checks account activity and device info, and that results typically arrive within 24 hours.
  4. Submit once. Meta reviews one phone number per appeal, and asking again, or from another account, does not speed it up.
  5. Wait for the notification that says Account review completed, then open the app to read the decision. If the account is restored, the screen changes to This account can now use WhatsApp and asks you to verify the number to log back in and see your chats.

Step 2 opens a short sheet before anything is sent.

WhatsApp's Add a review reason sheet with four options: my account was stolen, my account was flagged by mistake, I broke the rules by accident and have reviewed the Terms of Service, and something else, above a Request review button.

Tap Request review and this sheet appears. Pick the true reason; the review checks account activity and device info, not your wording.

Since there is nothing to write, the review is decided by what the account did, not by how you explain it.

While you wait, keep your customers informed on the channels that still work: your website chat, Instagram, email, a temporary notice on your Google Business Profile. A day of silence is what turns a ban into lost customers.

The decision arrives as a push notification, so keep notifications on.

If your business runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform

If your WhatsApp is connected to any software, an AI assistant, a CRM, a booking tool, a broadcast platform, you are on the WhatsApp Business Platform, and the rules above do not apply the same way. Meta runs three separate controls here, and knowing which one hit you tells you what to do.

On Invent, those three signals sit on one screen, so you see a limit or a rating move before Meta has to tell you.

Invent's WhatsApp panel for a business called Pixel Garage showing account health Limited, business verification pending, a messaging limit of 250 new conversations per 24 hours with 2K, 10K, 100K, and unlimited tiers, and a quality rating of High.

Account health, messaging limit, and quality rating in Invent. High is Meta's Green; the 250 starter limit climbs after business verification.

Quality rating: Green, Yellow, Red

Meta's quality rating page defines it as a rating "based on the recent messages that your customers have received over the past 7 days," determined by customer feedback such as the reason they blocked your number. Green is high quality, Yellow medium, Red low. You find it under the Phone numbers tab in WhatsApp Manager, and when it is Yellow or Red you can hover to see the block reasons.

A Red rating is the Platform's version of a warning. Fix the cause within days and it climbs back; leave it and your messaging limit stays frozen and new templates get harder to approve. Providers who manage many accounts say the same from experience: a sudden ban on an account that was clean for years usually traces to a recent rating drop or a flag on one template, so look there first.

One correction to most guides you will find: Meta's page states that the phone number statuses "Flagged" and "Restricted" were discontinued on October 7, 2025. If a guide is still teaching them, it is a year out of date.

Messaging limits

Meta's messaging limits are the number of unique customers you can message outside the 24-hour customer window in a moving 24-hour period. New business portfolios start at 250. The limit rises to 2,000 by completing a scaling path (business verification, partner verification, or 2,000 delivered high-quality template messages in 30 days), then to 10,000, 100,000, and unlimited by automatic scaling as your quality holds.

Two things agencies learn the hard way. Limits are set per business portfolio and shared across every number in it, so one client's bad campaign can cap all of them. Providers who run many clients keep a separate business portfolio per client for exactly this reason. And limits are earned by quality, not bought.

Enforcement and appeals on the Platform

Platform enforcement arrives as a policy notice on the WhatsApp Business Account, a paused template, or a lowered limit, and appeals run from Meta Business Suite: open Settings, then WhatsApp accounts, select the affected account, and choose Request review. Decisions come back to the same place. Unlike the app, this appeal has a place for written details. A version that reads well:

Hello. This WhatsApp Business Account belongs to [business name], a [type of business] in [city]. We use the number to answer customers who contact us and to confirm appointments with approved templates. In the last week we sent a batch of reminders to customers who had not messaged us first, which I now understand may have triggered this. We have stopped that and will only message customers who have opted in. Please review the account. Thank you.

What it does: names the business, shows a legitimate use, owns the likely cause, and states the fix. What it avoids: anger, length, claims of innocence without facts, and any request to "restore immediately."

If your account is managed through a provider, your provider can see the same status and help you file it, but the decision is Meta's. One more door the free app never has: a Tech Partner or Business Solution Provider can open a support ticket with Meta on your behalf, so ask before you wait out a review alone.

What never to do while you wait

Every one of these shows up in the "banned again" stories.

  • Do not reinstall WhatsApp or re-register the number during a temporary block.
  • Do not move the SIM to another phone to "reset" the account.
  • Do not appeal from someone else's account or submit the review three times.
  • Do not start a new number and repeat the same outreach. The pattern follows you.

If the number is gone: rebuilding without repeating it

When the review is denied or there was never a button, the honest answer is a new number, set up the way Meta intends.

One caveat before you buy a SIM. Owners keep reporting that a banned number came back on its own around day 60; the most detailed account on r/whatsapp got a WhatsApp Business account back one day short of 60 days, with no reason given either way. Meta publishes no such window, so treat it as a possibility, not a plan: keep the app installed on the banned number, and build the new one in the meantime.

  1. Choose the right product
Need to message people who have not written to you first? Use the WhatsApp Business Platform through an official provider. Only answering customers who write to you, at low volume? The free app is fine. The Platform is Meta's supported route for business-initiated messages: approved templates, a messaging limit that grows with your quality rating, and the same policies applied through a different process. It is not immunity from enforcement; it is the version built for that use.
  2. Collect opt-in before the first message
Keep the proof. A checkbox on your site, a reply to your ad, a form at the counter. This is the single biggest difference between a Green number and a banned one.
  3. Warm the number
Start with customers who already know you and let the limit climb on its own.
  4. Use templates for anything you send first
Pick the right category, and keep marketing out of utility. Our WhatsApp templates guide covers approval and categories.
  5. Put a card on the account
From October 1, 2026, replies on the Platform are billed after 1,000 free per number each month, and accounts without a payment method stop delivering. The pricing guide has every country's rate and the setup.
  6. Tell your customers, gradually
The new number on the website, the Google Business Profile, the signature, and a broadcast from the old channels that still work. Do not link the new number to WhatsApp Web on day one, and do not message every contact at once to announce it.

How Invent keeps your WhatsApp number healthy

Invent is a Meta Business Partner, and our customers run their WhatsApp numbers on the Platform through us every day. We built Invent around the same rules explained in this guide. The product is designed to reduce the most common causes of restrictions by keeping your messaging paced, on approved templates, and answered. Consent and what you send are still yours.

  • Templates for anything you send first
Outbound goes through approved templates in the right category, and you get an email the moment a template is approved, rejected, or changes category.
  • Pacing built into broadcasts
Every campaign is spread over a window you choose instead of going out in one burst.
  • Replies in seconds, around the clock
Your AI agent answers every inbound message in seconds, from your own data, in the customer's language, at any hour. A replied-to conversation is the healthiest signal a number can send.
  • Account health on one screen
Messaging limit, quality rating, and business verification sit next to the number in Invent, so you see a rating drop or a limit change before it becomes a notice.
  • A human one click away
One shared inbox for every channel. Your team sees what the agent said and takes over the second a conversation needs a person.

None of it prevents a ban by magic. It keeps the number doing the things Meta rewards.

If you are an Invent customer, you have completed the steps above, and the number is still blocked, contact our support team. We will review the account with you and check what else can be done.

You can start free with 100 messages a month and connect your WhatsApp number in minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Why did WhatsApp Business ban my number?

Meta bans accounts whose activity it considers a violation of its Terms of Service, and it names spam, fraud, and risks to other users' safety as examples. In practice the common triggers are messaging people who never contacted you, too many unanswered chats in a month, the same message pasted to many contacts, a modified app, or a sudden surge of new chats after an ad.

How long does a WhatsApp Business ban last?

A temporary block shows a countdown, usually 24 hours, and clears on its own. A permanent ban stays until a review reverses it. Meta says most reviews are completed within 24 hours of the request. Some owners report a banned number returning on its own around 60 days, but Meta publishes no such window.

Can I get unbanned from WhatsApp Business?

Only through the Request review button in the app, and only if the button is there. Meta states that if there is no option to request a review, the ban is final. No third party can unblock an account.

Is there a WhatsApp support email for banned numbers?

No. Meta's help page says that contacting WhatsApp outside the review process does not speed up the review or change the decision, and that only WhatsApp can block or unblock an account. Addresses posted in forums are either ignored or scams.

Why does my WhatsApp Business keep getting banned?

Because the trigger is still active: the outreach pattern, a modified app that was never removed, or a device pattern that looks automated. Fix the cause before the next review. Meta reviews one number per appeal.

What is a WhatsApp Business quality rating?

A rating based on the messages customers received from your number in the last 7 days, set by their feedback such as block reasons. Green is high, Yellow medium, Red low. It applies to the WhatsApp Business Platform and appears under Phone numbers in WhatsApp Manager.

What is a WhatsApp messaging limit?

The number of unique customers a business portfolio can message outside the 24-hour customer window in a moving 24-hour period: 250 to start, then 2,000, 10,000, 100,000, and unlimited as your quality holds. Limits are shared across every number in the portfolio.

Was my WhatsApp Business banned by mistake?

Possibly. On August 3, 2026 Meta confirmed that its automated moderation wrongly flagged accounts and restored them. If your screen says "under review" rather than "can't use WhatsApp," wait the 24 hours before doing anything.

Can I recover my chats after a ban?

Only through a backup, and only once the number is unblocked. Meta's page states you cannot access chat history or backups while the account is banned. Turn on backups today.
