What is Auto Follow-ups?
Auto Follow-ups is a capability inside Invent that lets your AI assistant send smart, automatic follow-up messages when conversations go idle, after hours, on weekends, or any time your team is busy.
Instead of silently closing inactive chats, the assistant:
- Analyzes the conversation context to understand where things left off
- Decides whether it should re-engage or close gracefully
- Schedules follow-ups at intelligent intervals so they never feel spammy
- Closes the conversation with a summary and optional CSAT if there’s no response
This is not a generic “Hey, are you still there?” bot. The assistant follows up based on what was actually discussed, like asking for a missing size, date, or detail needed to complete the request.

Polite persistence: Invent’s Auto Follow-ups know just when to check in—keeping conversations warm and customers cared for, no matter how busy they get.
Why Auto Follow-ups matter for revenue
Without Auto Follow-ups, idle conversations are simply closed after a timeout, and the lead disappears. With Auto Follow-ups enabled, every silent drop-off becomes an opportunity to re-open the conversation and recover potential revenue.
Businesses that consistently follow up with idle conversations recover significantly more leads than those that let them slip away, especially during busy seasons or outside business hours. The difference between a recovered lead and a lost one is often just one well-timed message.
Even a small lift in recovered conversations can translate into thousands in extra revenue per month for busy teams.
How Auto Follow-ups works in practice
AI-initiated follow-ups
When a customer stops responding, your Invent assistant:
- Detects the inactivity and analyzes the entire conversation
- Chooses one of three paths: re-engage now, schedule a follow-up for later, or close gracefully
- Schedules follow-ups at natural intervals (for example, “Follow up in 23 hours”) instead of pinging immediately
- Closes the conversation with a summary and optional CSAT prompt if there’s still no reply after multiple attempts

Upgrade from silent closures: Invent’s Auto Follow-ups go beyond auto-resolve by intelligently re-engaging, following up, or closing conversations with a human touch.
Customer-requested follow-ups
If a customer says, “Can you check in with me tomorrow?” or “Talk to me in 24 hours,” the assistant understands this and automatically schedules a follow-up for the right time.
Real scenarios: From silent to successful
- Abandoned product inquiry
A customer asks about your premium plan, then disappears.- Without Auto Follow-ups: the conversation closes quietly and the lead is gone.
- With Auto Follow-ups: the assistant follows up with, “Hi! You were asking about our premium plan earlier. Would you like me to walk you through the pricing?” and the conversation resumes.
- Missing information in a booking
Someone starts a booking but never provides a preferred time.
The assistant reasons, “The user started a booking request but hasn’t provided their preferred time,” and sends a follow-up like:
“Hey! I’d love to finish getting your appointment set up. What time works best for you?” - Multi-day follow-up sequence
- Schedules a follow-up for the next morning
- Sends a friendly check-in
- Schedules one final follow-up if there’s still no response
- Closes with a summary and CSAT prompt
Auto Follow-ups behaves like a diligent sales or support rep who never forgets to circle back.
Auto Follow-ups vs. Auto-resolve
Invent also includes Auto-Resolve, which simply closes idle conversations. Auto Follow-ups replaces that with something smarter and more human.

See the difference: Auto Follow-ups transform idle chats from abrupt endings to intelligent, helpful interactions, boosting lead recovery and customer satisfaction.
When you enable Auto Follow-Ups, it takes over idle handling from Auto-Resolve, acting as a lead recovery engine rather than a simple closer.
Full visibility and control for your team
In the Invent inbox, your team always stays in control:
- Scheduled follow-ups appear directly in the conversation with their planned time
- A Cancel button lets humans stop any follow-up and jump in themselves
- AI reasoning is visible, so you can see why the assistant scheduled a follow-up
- The contact panel clearly shows when the next follow-up is due
This makes Auto Follow-ups safe for teams that need oversight while still benefiting from automation.
Customizing Follow-up behavior
Auto Follow-ups works great out of the box, but you can tune it to fit your playbook by adding simple rules to your assistant’s Instructions. For example:
- Limit follow-ups to 3 attempts total
- Space follow-ups at least 12 hours apart
- Only send messages during business hours
- Offer a discount or free trial on the final follow-up
- Escalate to a human if the customer shows signs of frustration or mentions a complaint
You can also specify tone guidelines, like keeping follow-up messages short, friendly, and under two sentences.
Channels and best practices
Auto Follow-ups works on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and other supported messaging channels (not the web widget).
This is where Auto Follow-ups shines: Invent respects each channel’s rules while still keeping your follow-up engine running.
For best results:
- Enable it together with Memories so follow-ups can reference past context
- Trust the AI’s timing unless you have a specific reason to override
- Review early follow-ups to ensure they align with your brand voice
- Combine with Auto CSAT to get feedback even from conversations that didn’t convert
- Don’t stress about AI credits, the cost of a few analyses is tiny compared to the revenue of a recovered lead
- WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger: Once a customer messages you, you have 24 hours to reply freely. After that, you can only send pre-approved Message Templates from Broadcasts.
- Telegram: You can follow up with a lead days, weeks, or even months later.

Understand your follow-up limits: Messaging windows for WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Telegram, what happens when the clock runs out.
How to turn on Auto Follow-ups in Invent
Getting started takes less than a minute:
- Open the assistant you want to configure and go to Settings
- Scroll to the Capabilities section alongside Auto-Resolve, Auto CSAT, Memories, Spam Protection, and Transfer to Human
- Toggle Auto Follow-Ups on, you’ll see it marked as “Recommended” because it consistently drives better outcomes
From there, your AI assistant starts handling follow-ups for you, even when your team is offline.
Never let a conversation die in silence
Every idle chat is either a lost opportunity or a delayed win. With Auto Follow-ups from Invent, your assistant becomes the teammate who always remembers to check back in, closes loops gracefully, and recovers leads you would have otherwise lost.
