TL;DR

To connect Instagram with your Assistant you must use a public, business (18+), non-teen account with open message access. Update your age and verify with ID if needed.

A table with three columns: Requirement, What to do, and Why? The rows list requirements for Instagram API access. They include: Public Account (disable private account, must be public), Teen Account Restrictions (change birth date; upload ID, if registered as a teen), Business Mode (switch to business account, needed for API), and Message Request Access (allow everyone, needed for API). The table has a blue and white gradient background.

Instagram API requirements: Your account must be public, set to business mode, allow message requests from everyone, and not have teen restrictions to enable access for integrations.

Step-by-Step integration requirements

To connect your Instagram account with your AI Assistant, your account must meet specific requirements and privacy settings. The steps below detail every necessary action and clarify which conditions are true for successful integration, including public account settings, teen account restrictions, and message access permissions.

1. Switch your Instagram account to a public profile.

It cannot be set as "private" under Account Privacy settings. Go to your Instagram privacy settings and ensure the "Private account" toggle is disabled, making your content visible to everyone.

Options include toggling between a public and private account, and whether to allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results. Both toggles are off. The screen is dark-themed with white text, and the background shows a soft pink and purple gradient.

Instagram account privacy settings let you choose between a private or public account.

If your account is labeled as a "teen account" (created by users under 18), Instagram enforces stricter messaging and privacy limitations. To link with business tools like Invent, you'll need an account flagged as adult or business/professional. For teen accounts, Instagram now often restricts access to advanced API features (including messaging) to comply with safety and legal guidelines. You may have to update the date of birth to indicate you are 18+, and in some cases, Instagram may request further age verification such as a government-issued ID. Dive more into this instructions here.

2. Message request

  • Enable message access in your Instagram profile. Navigate to Settings -> Messages and Story Replies -> Message Controls, and set "Allow access to messages" enabled.
  • Under "Who can send message requests," select "Everyone" so that Invent and other approved tools can interact with your account through the API on message reception.

The options include toggling access to messages for connected tools, deciding who can send you message requests (Everyone, Your followers, No one), and who can send you group message requests (Everyone, People you follow). The background is dark, and the device screen has rounded corners over a pink-gradient background.

Instagram message requests settings give you control over who can send you direct and group message requests, and whether connected tools can access these messages.

2. Professional Account setup

Instagram requires that your account be set as a professional or business account to use integrations with business automation platforms like Invent.

  • Set up or convert your profile to a professional account in Instagram settings. Dive more about these instructions here.

Additional options include adding links, banners, music, and gender. Near the bottom, a highlighted button reads "Switch to professional account." The interface is dark-themed with text and options arranged vertically.

Instagram's Edit Profile screen lets you update your personal information, including your name, pronouns, bio, and more. The "Switch to professional account" option is highlighted for users who want to upgrade their profile.

3. Verification and Teen Account restrictions

  • Instagram started auto-enforcing teen restrictions in 2024-2025, so accounts registered as minors will have PG-13 content limits and blocked messaging/tagging with some tools and automation services.
  • If your account is still marked as "teen," you must change your birth date to 18+ and, if prompted, upload a valid ID for verification. This step is necessary to fully disable teen account limitations and access business automation features.
  • Once your account is recognized as adult/professional and set to public, you are ready to connect it to Invent for assistant automation.

4. Connect Channel on Invent

Once your account is recognized as adult/professional and set to public, you are ready to connect it to Invent.

Under Channels, click on Instagram and Connect your account.

The "Connection" dropdown shows an Instagram account named "useinvent" selected. A prominent purple button at the bottom right reads "Connect Channel." The background displays other integration options like Telegram Bot, Slack Bot, and WhatsApp Business, in a dark-themed interface.

FAQs

Why isn't Instagram connecting to my AI assistant?

Because all the requirements have to be true at once: the account must be public, a professional or business account, owned by an adult (18 or older, not a teen account), and have message access enabled. If any one of them is off, the connection fails, so re-check all four in your Instagram settings before retrying.

Why did my Instagram connection stop working after it was set up correctly?

Instagram can silently revert the settings the connection depends on: the account flips back to private, message requests get restricted, or teen limitations get re-applied after a profile change. When a working connection breaks, re-check the four requirements first (public, professional, 18+, message access) rather than reconnecting the channel.

Does my Instagram account need a minimum number of followers to connect an AI assistant?

No. Follower count and verified badges play no role: the requirements are only that the account is public, professional or business, adult-owned, and has message access enabled. A brand-new business account with zero followers connects the same way as a large one.

Does an Instagram AI assistant reply to comments or only direct messages?

The connection unlocks direct messages: the assistant answers DMs and message requests instantly, and your team can watch or take over from the inbox. Public comment replies are a different Instagram surface and are not part of the message-access setup this guide covers.

Can I connect multiple Instagram accounts if I manage clients as an agency?

Yes. Each client's Instagram account goes through the same eligibility checklist and connects under Channels for its own assistant, so an agency can run a separate assistant per client and manage every conversation from one place.

Do I need a developer or any coding to connect Instagram to an AI assistant?

No. Every step is a toggle inside Instagram's own settings plus one click under Channels in Invent; there are no API keys or code involved. If a step asks for anything technical, you are likely on the wrong screen: it should only ever ask about privacy, account type, age, and message access.
